FAQs
Q: Can you help me in a medical emergency?
A: YES. Dr. Pelletier makes himself available 24/7 for ocular emergencies. Please call the office at (207) 363-7555 and you will be directed either by a staff member or our after-hours recording on what to do in an emergency.
Immediate medical attention is necessary for the following:
- Eye trauma
- Foreign bodies in the eye
- Sudden vision loss
- Flashes or floaters that persist
- Eye pain
Q: How many doctors do you have on staff?
A: Dr. Pelletier’s chooses to be the solo practitioner at York Family Eyecare, to keep the practice as personalized as possible.
The doctor has plenty of excellent staff to support him during your visit. We think you will love our unique approach, and the thorough care and genuine doctor-patient connections that it enables us to provide.
Q: I’m confused by the different types of eye doctors. Who do I need?
A: Typical eyecare patients are best served by an optometrist, which is Dr. Pelletier’s designation. His discipline is considered to be part of a patient’s primary-care plan.
If you develop more complex medical issues with your eyes, Dr. P. is excellent at diagnosing them. He is very proactive in making the appropriate referral to a specialist whenever it becomes necessary. To provide continuity of care, he remains your primary-care eye doctor during and after a referral.
Having patients seen by the most appropriate type of provider is beneficial to everyone in the healthcare system—especially patients. Seeing a specialist when it is not medically necessary actually “overloads the system,” making it more difficult for those with more complex medical needs to be seen by a specialist.
Q: How do you handle patient confidentiality?
A: York Family Eyecare has always taken patient privacy very seriously. We understand the importance of having your private personal information thoroughly protected.
The good news is that provisions for protection of your patient privacy are now federal law, thanks to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). We work hard to uphold this law in our practice.
If you would like a copy of the HIPAA statement, or if you have any questions or concerns about your patient confidentiality at York Family Eyecare, please let us know.
Q: Can you treat my whole family?
A: YES, we are a family practice that is designed to work with all ages, from newborns to geriatric patients. Dr. Pelletier has a wonderful rapport with every patient he sees.
Q: How long will it take me to get an appointment?
We always try to provide same-day appointments when they are requested. Otherwise, we are generally able to have you seen within a week.
You are welcome to come visit our in-house optical boutique without an appointment, during regular business hours.
Q: Will an eye exam be covered by my insurance?
A: Insurance benefits for routine and preventive exams vary from plan to plan. While it is the patient’s responsibility to be familiar with their coverage prior to their appointment, we can help. Please let us know if you would like for us to contact your insurance company to verify your benefits coverage prior to services being rendered.
Q: Which insurance plans do you accept?
We participate in most HMO, PPO, and traditional insurance plans. Please check with your plan prior to your visit, to see if York Family Eyecare is listed as a provider.
We also offer competitive fees for those patients without insurance. We pride ourselves on taking excellent care of our patients, and will go the extra mile to see that they receive proper care.
We are unfortunately not able to accept VSP or EyeMed. However, our patients on these plans can submit receipts to the insurance provider for reimbursement.
Please contact us to discuss your options, and to ask any questions you may have.
Q: May I walk in if I need help with my glasses?
A: Yes, please come in anytime during our regular business hours if you need an adjustment, a repair, or cleaning of your glasses. Our opticians love to help out, and to make sure your glasses are working, feeling, and fitting you well.
